General Information
The Department of Food Engineering was founded in 1996 as one of the six departments of the Izmir Institute of Technology. Our department offers MSc and PhD programs.
The mission of our department is to educate graduate students who are able to use scientific knowledge and methods to solve their problems in food engineering and related fields, evaluate and interpret with an interdisciplinary perspective. The main aim of our department is to educate engineers who can make innovative contributions to rapidly developing food industry and agriculture, and also to train engineers who can take part in the stages of production and control of healthy products in accordance with the increasing health concerns. The effective use of English in our university’s teaching language and the ability to present information and data in written and oral form are also important achievements of our students.
In addition to our educational activities, our faculty members conduct research on food chemistry, food microbiology, food biotechnology, experimental design, functional foods, biospectroscopy, food and bioprocesses. An important feature of our department is the competence of our department in the fields of biotechnology. Our faculty members are regularly conducting international publications and receiving awards or achievements at national and international conferences, project competitions and events. The total number of SCI and SCI Expanded publications that the faculty members have done in the last 5 years is 88 and this means that 1.76 publications are made per faculty member and that in this respect, we are at the forefront of our country. Our department R & D and innovation in the recent past, some important achievements has attained the most important of which Turkey exporter of parliament (TIM) held at the 2012 national R & D projects market in the event third prize, TIM 2013 international AGRI project market activity in the first prize, ministry of industry success story in 2013 of a project to take place in Turkey in 2012 and 2013 catalogs and Innovation Week activities two project were selected as the invited project.
In our department TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) as domestic and European COST (Cooperation in Science and Technology) as foreign-funded projects were carried out and are carried out. Our faculty members carry out joint studies with companies operating in different fields of the private sector.
Currently, there are a total of 39 graduate students including 12 faculty members, 1 faculty member, 2 specialists, 16 research assistants and 17 graduate and 22 doctoral students.
Our training and research activities are carried out in 1 class (41 m2), 18 staff (faculty member, secretary, room for research assistants (408 m2) and additionally in research laboratories.
